What Are The Effects Of Taking Methamphetamines?

Methamphetamines are a branch of the amphetamine group of drugs, and can be powerful stimulants. The drugs are synthetic and there are variations in the formulation. This means that you can rarely be sure what the exact effects - and risks - are of taking them.

What Are The Effects Of Meth?

Methamphetamine - also known as crank or crystal - increases arousal in the brain, which has a highly stimulating effect. The drug user may feel exhilarated and full of energy, as well as very alert. Meth also lowers inhibitions, in the same way that other substances such as alcohol can. This increases the likelihood of the user engaging in highly risky behavior.

However, the effects can vary between individuals. Whereas one person may feel very "up", another person may feel very depressed, irritable or confused when taking the same drug. Just because you have previously used meth without a bad experience does not mean you will not have a negative reaction in future.

What Are The Risks Of Using Methamphetamine?

The effects of meth are relatively long lasting and are always followed by a very severe comedown, where the user can feel sick and depressed. But the true consequences are far more serious than this.

Methamphetamine carries a higher risk of psychosis than almost any other drug. Psychosis is when a person becomes paranoid and delusional, and can lose touch with reality. The brain can recover, but this usually takes a long time and considerate medical support.

There are also many incidences of lung, kidney, heart and gastrointestinal damage when meth is taken in high doses. There is also a small risk of coma or even death.

You should never underestimate the problems associated with taking meth. Speak to a medical professional if you need further advice.
